Jonathan McKernan, previously nominated to be director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), is now instead nominated to succeed former Treasury Under Secretary for Domestic Finance Nellie Liang, who reportedly resigned from the post early this year.
Treasury’s domestic finance office oversees the Financial Institutions, Financial Markets, Fiscal Service, and Financial Stability Offices, Treasury’s website shows.
The Senate’s website shows McKernan’s nomination to the Treasury post was received by the Senate June 2; the Senate Banking Committee site shows McKernan’s CFPB nomination withdrawn.
In the meantime, it appears White House budget director Russell Vought, the acting bureau director who has directed a halt in enforcement for numerous bureau rules and withdrawn dozens of guidance documents, remains in charge of the bureau.
