A former Treasury official, John Crews, was sworn in Monday to a seat on the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Board and designated chairman, the agency said, by President Donald Trump.
Crews, nominated in May and confirmed by the Senate Aug. 7 on a party-line vote of 51-47, issued a statement pledging to “capitalize on the agency’s progress on two of the Administration’s most ambitious goals: enabling innovation and right sizing the regulatory framework that governs the financial services industry.”

Crews today begins his service for a term that will last through Aug. 2, 2031. His board service begins more than one year following the expiration of the board term of Kyle Hauptman, the previous chairman. Hauptman had been serving as the lone NCUA Board member since last spring, when the president, reportedly without cause, terminated the board’s two Democratic members, Todd Harper (also a former chairman) and Tanya Otsuka. (The two continue to seek reappointment.)
Hauptman was appointed earlier this year to the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) but was only sworn in Aug. 10, three days after the Senate confirmed Crews. Since then and up until today’s swearing in of Crews, the agency has been operating with no sitting board member. The board, by statute, was established as a three-member board.
NCUA on Monday announced Crews’ designation as chairman but included no mention in its release of his swearing-in. The agency did, however, post a message on X.com stating he was sworn in.
The agency also has yet (as of this writing) to post any information about Crews in the “leadership” section of its website, and it shows currently no board meetings or other events scheduled.
The NCUA’s release Monday said Crews “expressed his commitment to the safety, soundness, and resilience of the credit union system, emphasizing his focus on strengthening financial stability, fostering responsible innovation, and ensuring effective oversight.”
It quoted Crews stating that his priorities “include safeguarding the interests of credit union member-owners, promoting regulatory efficiency, maintaining a strong and healthy National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, and supporting initiatives that promote access to affordable financial services nationwide.”
The agency notes that just before taking his board seat, Crews served as deputy assistant secretary for financial institutions policy at Treasury, focusing on regulation, financial infrastructure, and safety and soundness matters.
Crews previously served as policy advisor to House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R) and as policy director for the Senate Banking Committee, NCUA said. He served during the first Trump administration at the White House National Economic Council as special assistant to the president for economic policy. It said Crews holds a bachelor’s degree in politics from Princeton University.
